Sugar-Free Sweets and Chocolate

A pack that reads “No Sugar” on the front still lists sugars on the back. The phrase covers what the maker left out, and at 4ecoshop the no-added-sugar shelf gathers two ideas of sweetness – one leans on a sweetener, the other on fruit alone. Sugar-free sweets from this shelf show a few grams of sugars per 100 g on one panel and closer to forty on another. Find out which route each format takes and what the panel actually says!

What are sugar-free sweets sweetened with?

Two mechanisms sweeten this shelf: a polyol such as maltitol, or fruit and dates alone. Torras builds its 60 g Hey Go bars on maltitol, the first ingredient listed, and declares 42.1 g to 44.9 g of polyols per 100 g. Sugars on the same panel come to 6.0 g to 7.5 g. Xylitol and erythritol do the same job on other packs.

Fruit and dates carry the sweetness on their own. Bob Snail presses fruit, with apple at 54.4% and cherry at 13.6% in its cherry and cashew bar. Dobra Kaloria builds its Mini Bars on cashews at 36%, date paste at 30% and raisins at 25%. Nothing sweet goes in on top. Decide first what should be doing the sweetening, and compare individual packs after that.

Sugar-free chocolate and wafer rolls

Composition is what separates the chocolate here. Torras makes three 60 g Hey Go bars. The milk chocolate carries puffed rice at 10%, one white bar roasted pistachios at 10% with 4% pistachio paste, and the second white bar hazelnuts at 15%. All three come from Spain, with a “may contain soy and sesame” note on the wrapper.

Wafer rolls come from Happy Swing in 150 g vanilla packs, with Allnutrition Fitking wafers in 150 g boxes and 18 g Crunchee. When cocoa percentage is the deciding factor, our healthy chocolate category lists the same Torras bars together with Cocoa at 70%, 80% and 99%, plus Meybona at 72% and 85%.

Which sweets work for children?

Lollipops and gelatine-free jellies are the two formats in which sugar-free sweets work for children, and both belong to this category. Bunny Ninja makes fruit lollipops and the Lasso fruit snack, Starpharma sells lollipop sets, and Biominki makes jellies without gelatine.

The V, K, GF, SF and BIO markers narrow this shelf to a single diet before flavour even enters the choice. Selected products carry vegan, keto or gluten-free declarations, and Frank & Oli put it into the biscuit name. When children are the whole reason for the order, our healthy sweets for kids category takes the same Bunny Ninja and Starpharma lollipops. It adds gelatine-free jellies from Bio Planet and a cocoa and nut biscuit.

Fruit bars with no added sugar

No added sugar sweets in bar form come down to pressed fruit and dates. Bob Snail's 35 g cherry bar lists cashews at 22% and quinoa crisps at 2%. Its panel gives 372 kcal, 8.8 g of fibre and 6.6 g of protein per 100 g, clearing the high fibre threshold of 6 g. Sugars run to 38 g, all of it from the fruit.

Dobra Kaloria's 102 g Mini Bars in the A'la Lemon Tart version add lemon juice powder at 2%. That panel reaches 42 g of sugars and 8.5 g of protein per 100 g, with an allergen note for nuts, sesame, milk and gluten. Where the real question is fruit or protein, our healthy bars category holds those same bars together with the protein formats.

Reading the label: no added sugar and naturally occurring sugars

Three phrases mean three different things on a UK label. Sugar-free chocolate would have to show 0.5 g of sugars per 100 g at most. Low sugar snacks sit at no more than 5 g, and no added sugar means nothing sweet went in during production. The Torras bars show 6.0 g to 7.5 g and the fruit bars 38 g to 42 g, and both of those groups fall in the no added sugar bracket.
